MELODY KWEBAMELODY KWEBA

Melody Kweba is an extraordinarily determined and focused woman and has carried out pioneering work in getting Africa’s mineral wealth to benefit African women. Rising from a caterer to owning a mining company in her native South Africa is no mean achievement. But not just owning and managing a mine, it is the transformation she has brought about by giving women a chance to work in her mine as dignified and respected employees. To combat the insecurity and exposure to violence that women face while working in underground mines, she innovatively designed a shift system that puts more women underground with few male colleagues. This turned around the tables and automatically safeguarded women employees from exploitation and violations. Her remarkable business prowess in owning and running a mine led to her rise to lead South Africa’s Women in Mining Association (SAWIMA) and its investment vehicle South African Women in Mining Investment Holdings (SAWIM lH).
